1. John Joseph SWEET was born about 1833. He died on 16 Nov 1917 in Stevens St Norwood, SA. The cause of death was Senile decay and heart failure. He was buried on 18 Nov 1917 in Hindmarsh Cemetery, SA.
John Joseph, or Jo as he was known seems to be an illusive person. In the book 'Captain Sweets Adelaide' by Philip Pike he is said to be the brother of Samuel White SWEET, however the IGI and other records do not seem to agree. In fact we can not locate a birth for him at all in Portsmouth which is his place of birth on his childrens birth certificates. There was a John Seymour SWEET who was born about that time, brother of Samuel, however he is shown to be married and living in England well after Jo was here having children.
The book tells how as a youth he ran away from his family in Portsmouth by jumping ship to Australia after his father and brother insited he go to Naval Academy. It also tells of his families epic journey down the river from Gundagai NSW to Adelaide SA, however there is more to the story including his supposed marriage to wife Emma Cramp. In fact it seems they were not married and Emma had actually married James Sullivan in 1864 in Gundagai. The first two children James and William were actually born Sullivans, but soon after Emma is recorded with Jo Sweet and the children all take his surname of Sweet.Residence: Stephen Street Norwood SA

John was not married to Emma Pratten CRAMP daughter of Samuel CRAMP and Margaret MURPHY. Emma was born on 7 Oct 1844 in Crookwell River, Goulburn NSW. She was christened on 13 Sep 1845 in Parish of St. Savious, County of Argyle, NSW. She died on 6 Oct 1918 in Adelaide Hospital SA. She was buried in Hindmarsh Cemetery, SA.
Emma appears to be born just after the death of her father. She was christened on the same day as her mother remarried Isaac Pratten. This no doubt is why she was given Pratten as a middle name.
On her daughter Emily Edith's marriage certificate she signed her name with a mark.
Residence at time of death was Stevens St Norwood, SASources:
